Before we go into the details of installing, let’s first know how they work.
How do they work?
A sump pump is installed at the basement, or any desired place, from where you want keep water out. They work on the principle of suction pressure. The electric motor inside a sump pump rotates, due to magnetic effect of the current carrying coil. Now this coil is further attached to impeller, which is designed in a way to create suction pressure, by having wings at certain angle from the horizontal axis. The water get sucked by this pressure, and through proper piping, it gets to the nearby drain, or to the desired place. This simple pump can guarantee you no water and flooding in your basement area. They’re efficient and specially designed to work in rough conditions to give heavy duty performance.
Before you start installing the pump, make sure that you have all the required parts and tools, for the operation and working. After you ensure that you have tools, and parts, let’s focus on following steps to install a sump pump.
- Finding a location
Firstly, you have to find a place in the basement that is best suited for throwing the water out. This place must be the one, where most of the water gets collected. Make sure you have a proper Ground Fault Interrupter Outlet plug for providing the electricity to the sump pump. If the plug is at any other place, make sure you do proper wiring to the desired place, or if not present, call an electrician, to get it installed. It is recommended to install a new plug, because long wiring can be a problem, if water fills out in the basement. After installing the plug, you need to ensure it working.
- Dig a hole
Pick up a strong shovel and ding up the whole, in which the sumo is going to be placed. This whole should be large enough to hold it. It is advisable to dig a hole six inch deeper, and ten inch wider than your sump size. The advantage of this is that, you will get enough room for pump piping, and bigger hole is always better to throw water out. Make sure that the sump is properly placed and oriented. After installing the sump, you need to cover it
- Put some gravel
After placing the sump, put some gravel on the top of it. This will make the sump rigid and immovable. Only put the gravel, till you left with 1 or 2 inch of space below the ground. Check properly if the gravel is placed and levelled properly
- Attaching the adapters
After outing gravel, now take the male adapter and glue it to the PVC discharge pipe. After that place into the female adapter on the pump. Now take a 1/4 inch drill and make a hole into the discharge pipe about six inches above the pump. This is called weep hole, which will flow back the water into the pump, when it is switched off, to make in functional all the time. Double check the pipe joints, and glue them if you think they are not sufficiently tight. Any leakage in this area is not really a good thing for working of the pump.
- Installing check valve
Check valve is an important part. You have to attach the pumps electrical cord to the discharge pipe with the help of wires. Now install a check valve on the end where the discharge pipe opens. After installing the check valve, now all you have to do is, placing the pump in the sump and make it ready for throwing the water out. You valve should be made for vertical use only. This check valve is critical area, you should check the proper connections, and make sure it works when the water flows.
- Installing the piping
Now, attach the piping to the valve, and channel away it from the house. You can channel it to any of the drainage system nearby you. You should use pressurized fittings and 1 1/2 inch PVC. Pipe size can be changed according to the flow. Piping should be made from best of the industrial grade PVC. It is recommended to go for a good brand.
- Making a hole through the wall
Now install a “J” type hook, for the PVC pipe that would flow the water out of the wall, through a wall. Make sure that the pipe is enough long, and hole is enough wide to contain the pipe. Seal the additional space after installing with silicon sealant. This wouldn’t allow anything to enter through that hole, and make the pipe rigid.
- Distribute the flow
You can add further piper to distribute the flow into gardens, or any pit, or wherever you like. This could be done by installing a network of pipes. Concentrating the flow will make the surface muddy. It could affect your day to day works.
- Sump Cover
Firmly place the cover over the sump, and make sure that all the connections are tight and working. Cover is essential to make it safe from the children, and other minor accidents.
After this, put the wire into the plug, and your pump is ready for the work. It is advisable to keep an eye on the working of the pump at regular intervals of time. There is hardly any maintenance cost of you use the pump correctly.
Precautions while installing
- Check all the connections for leakage. You can do that by running the pump, and see every connection. If found any, power of the pump, unassemble the pipes, and thread the connection or tape it for tightness.
- Before plugging in, make sure that every wire is well placed and connected. Only then on the pump.
- Pump should always be filled with water, so that it can be functional right away. Do make sure of that.
- The hole through the wall should be sealed properly, because insects and other bugs can come into the home.
- The network should be concentrated at one point only, because that would cause soil to loosen up. Nobody likes muddy house.
- Don’t run the pump empty, it can cause harm to the coil and impeller.
- Check valve should be a vertical one.
